Retrograde

Retrograde in Astrology

Retrograde describes a period when a planet appears to move backward through the zodiac as seen from Earth — an optical illusion caused by relative orbital speeds. Planets don't actually reverse direction, but from our geocentric (Earth-centered) perspective, they temporarily appear to do so.

How Retrograde Works

As planets orbit the Sun at different speeds, there are periods when a faster inner planet overtakes a slower outer planet (or vice versa), creating the visual impression of backward motion. Mercury retrogrades when Earth overtakes it on the inside orbital track.

Natal Retrograde Planets

When a planet is retrograde at your birth, its themes turn inward. A natal Venus retrograde person may struggle to express affection outwardly but feels love deeply. A natal Saturn retrograde individual may internalize authority and develop self-discipline independently. These placements often bloom later in life as the person learns to externalize their internalized gifts.

Transit Retrograde Periods

When planets retrograde by transit, their energy shifts from forward momentum to review and revision:

  • Mercury retrograde: communication, contracts, technology, travel delays
  • Venus retrograde: relationship reassessment, financial review, aesthetic changes
  • Mars retrograde: delayed action, revisiting conflict, frustration with obstacles
  • Jupiter/Saturn retrograde: internal reassessment of beliefs, structure, long-term plans

Shadow Periods

Each retrograde has a shadow phase — a few weeks before and after where the planet traverses the same degrees it will retrograde over. Themes introduced in the pre-shadow often resolve only after the post-shadow ends.
