Stellium in Astrology

A stellium occurs when three or more planets occupy the same zodiac sign or astrological house. This concentration of energy makes that sign or house the dominant theme of the entire birth chart — the loudest, most persistent pattern in the person's life.

Sign Stellium vs. House Stellium

A sign stellium (multiple planets in Scorpio, for example) colors personality style and how all those planetary energies express themselves — all filtered through Scorpio's intensity, depth, and transformative nature.

A house stellium (multiple planets in the 8th house, for example) concentrates life activity in one domain — in this case, shared resources, sexuality, power, and transformation — regardless of which signs those planets are in.

Many stelliums occur in both the same sign and same house simultaneously.

The Stellium's Ruling Planet

The ruling planet of the stellium's sign becomes the chart ruler of the stellium and gains outsized importance. For a Scorpio stellium, both Mars (traditional ruler) and Pluto (modern ruler) become especially significant. Their sign, house, and aspect placement modifies the entire stellium's expression.

Balance and the Unoccupied Houses

A chart with a strong stellium often has equally striking empty areas — houses with no planets. These unoccupied areas don't disappear; they're accessed through the planets that rule those house cusps. But the stellium area will consistently demand more of the person's attention and energy.

Generational Stelliums

When outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) cluster together — as they periodically do — entire generations are born with a sign stellium. The personal planets that join this outer-planet cluster determine which individuals most powerfully express the generational theme.
